q2scene.net is back onlineq2scene.net stopped working a long time ago. At some point the domain lapsed, and by last year it was pointing at an Indonesian gambling site, which is the usual ending for an expired domain that once had traffic. I bought it back and rebuilt the site from Internet Archive captures. What you are looking at is the portal roughly as it stood between 2006 and 2009, in the original layout, with the original stylesheets and images pulled out of the archive along with the pages. What is hereThe news archive runs to December 2009. The last two posts on the front page were about a new server browser called QSB and the third season of Polska Liga Duelowa opening signups. There are 20 pages of older news behind that. The article sections came through mostly intact: duel tactics, the FAQ pages, 17 interviews going back to 2004, mods, maps and the alias and config scripts. The columns are here too, including the Christmas Special by Gerdt from 2008 and daelmun writing up QuakeCon in 2007. Each league that ran on the site has its front page back, frozen wherever the archive last caught it: EDL, EUROQ2L, RDL, BDL, NDML, 2x2, JUMP, The Edge, Kubus, Gibblördag, AmericaQ2L and the DemoSquad demo archive. What is missingNothing on the site works any more in the interactive sense. There are no logins, no comments, no signups, no polls you can vote in. It is static files now. Where a link used to do something that needs a database behind it, the text is still there but the link is gone. Most of the forum did not survive. The Archive crawled a handful of threads and skipped the rest, so what is at /forum/ is a fragment. The same goes for the layer below each league front page. Individual match reports, player profiles and clan pages were generated from a database that no longer exists, and the crawler only ever caught a few of them. Credit where it belongsI had nothing to do with the original site and I am not going to pretend otherwise. It was built by Krystian Zbikowski and run by the people whose names are on the crew page, with news posted by the handles you can still see on every item in the archive. This is their work. I only put the files back where they were. If you have anythingOld backups of the forum database, league tables, demo packs or anything else from q2scene would be worth more than another pass through the Archive. The same goes for corrections. If a page you remember is missing and you have some idea what the URL looked like, that is often enough to go and find it. |
