The leagues that ran on q2scene

2026-08-03 | site admin

q2scene was not only a news portal. A dozen leagues ran on it, each with its own subdomain-style section, its own admins and its own news feed. Most of them stopped between 2008 and 2010. This is what the archive shows of each one.

EDL, the European Duel League

The largest of them and the one other sites still link to most often. The archive catches it mid-season in January 2009, in the middle of group rounds and elimination brackets, with forced games being handed out to players who missed their fixtures. Match results are visible on the front page even though the individual match pages are gone.

EUROQ2L

Ran in numbered seasons. Season 10 finished in December 2008 and signups for season 11 opened in January 2009, which is where the capture stops. There was also a divisional structure with interviews of division winners.

RDL, the Russian Duel League

The only section on the site that ran entirely in Russian, interface and all. Four divisions with separate playoff tables. It was still being linked from Russian gaming sites years after the rest of the site went quiet.

BDL, the Balkan Duel League

Season 2 finished just before Christmas 2008, with careem beating U-God 3:2 in the final. Season 3 signups turn up in the portal news in October 2009, run by careem as reigning champion, which makes it one of the last things happening on the site.

NDML

Season 8 finished in April 2008. Signups for season 9 opened in January 2009 and the season was called off later the same month. That cancellation notice is the last thing in the section.

2x2

Two versus two rather than duel, played by teams with names like 2ez, 3M, tOk and 4fun. Season six ran through autumn 2008. There was a separate insta deathmatch version announced in October 2009.

JUMP

Movement rather than fragging. Tournaments were judged on jump maps, and the section kept a record of who took each one. The fifth tournament was won by n00k!e in November 2009 for a 60 euro prize, with goblin, zuen and dez taking the places behind him. That result was posted on the portal front page.

The Edge

The newest section here, opened at the end of September 2009 by Gerdt, who wrote that the game was about to turn twelve and that this needed celebrating. Quake II came out in December 1997, so he was counting to the same December the site went quiet.

DemoSquad

Not a league. A demo archive, with recordings and Quake 2 movies collected and hosted. The last news item is from December 2008 and the demo listings on the front page still show what was most recently added.

The smaller sections

Kubus, Gibblördag and AmericaQ2L are all here, though the Archive was less thorough with them. NADL, NADML, NiDML, PTDL and BRDL appear in the services menu of the original site but were not captured well enough to bring back.
